Story
Dear friends and family, On July 26th, my son Leo and I will be running/walking our first 5K together as part of Josie’s Place’s annual grief walk. We’re walking in memory of two incredible people we miss every single day: my husband, Aris, who passed away in March 2024, and my father, Angelo, who passed away just two months earlier in January.
Losing them both within such a short time has left a space in our lives that will never fully be filled. But Leo and I walk forward—side by side—carrying their love, their stories, and their memory with every step.
Josie’s Place has been one of the few spaces where grief feels understood. It’s where Leo has met other kids who know what it’s like to lose a parent. It’s where he can play, create, and remember—without needing to explain or pretend. And it’s given me space too—among other parents learning how to carry both heartbreak and hope.
This walk is a way for us to honor the people we’ve lost—and the love that continues.
If you knew Aris, you knew how much he loved music. His favorite band was King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, and I can’t not include a quote from one of their songs: “It’s hard to see the light / When you’re buried in the night / But I’m learning how to feel it.”
That’s what this walk is about. Learning to feel the light again—slowly, gently, together.
If you’re able to donate, you’ll be helping Josie’s Place continue their beautiful work with grieving families like ours. Every gift makes a difference—and helps ensure no child or parent has to walk this path alone.
With love and deep gratitude,
Lorena & Leo
